Why was Sicily so important to the ancient Greeks and Romans?

Sicily was already inhabited by ancient populations before the Greeks and Romans:

The oldest settlers were the Sicani, who founded their capital Kamikos near today’s Agrigento.

Then came Elimi, who founded some famous cities like Segesta and Erice.

The Sicilians inhabited Eastern Sicily building cities and wide necropolises.

Around 1000 BC, the Phoenicians founded cities such as Palermo, Solunto, and Mozia.

Finally, in the 18th and 17th centuries BC, the first Greek colonists arrived in Sicily. The foundations of the ancient cities are all described as myths, so we do not know precisely why Sicily was so important to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Still, we can say that the island was rich, and strategic in expanding commerce in the Mediterranean Sea.

Greek cities in Sicily

The Greeks started with the foundation of cities such as Naxos, Catania, and Messina on the eastern coast of Sicily. After a short while, more Greek populations settled around Syracuse and reached Agrigento.

Then the local population merged with the Greeks, resulting in a new civilization deeply connected to Greece.

The famous Greek philosophers and scientists Archimedes and Pythagoras were born in Sicily, and Syracuse became one of the most powerful Greek cities in the then-known world.

Ancient Romans in Sicily

When the Carthaginians spread in the Mediterranean, the rising Roman Empire defeated them in the First Punic War and then settled in Western Sicily – which so became a Roman province.

On the contrary, Eastern Sicily, with Syracuse as its capital, remained independent until the Romans incorporated the whole island into the Roman Empire after the Second Punic War in the 3rd century BC.

Top ancient sites in Eastern Sicily

The following is a list of the top ancient sites to visit in Sicily on the eastern coast:

On the western coast of Sicily, we highly recommend that you visit these top ancient sites:

Archaeological Area of Agrigento with its Valley of the Temples

Selinunte Archaeological Park

Segesta Archaeological Park

Villa Romana del Casale

Other interesting destinations on the western coast

📍 If you are an archaeology enthusiast and love ancient history, you might combine more archaeological sites and visit the archaeological area of Agrigento in combination with the mosaics of Piazza Armerina at the Villa Romana del Casale. And you might as well combine Segesta and Selinunte, the old enemy cities sharing some historic events.

📍 If you prefer to have a wider variety of experiences while in Sicily, you can extend your itinerary to Marsala, world-renowned for the Marsala sweet wine, and for the Florio family, wine producers with a long history that was recently at the center of the pretty famous book:” The Florios of Sicily: A Novel”.

📍 Continue north to reach Palermo, the capital of Sicily, rich in traditions and spectacular, sometimes unexpected monuments to visit. Palermo has its own airport and makes easy access to the rest of western Sicily.
Things to know before you visit the archaeological sites of Sicily

We recommend that travelers plan their visits to the ancient sites of Sicily to enjoy the tours in the best conditions possible.

So here we answer a couple of the most common questions and give you our best advice to enjoy your visits.

What is the best month to visit the archaeological sites in Sicily?

From March to June, you can enjoy the warm temperatures and the scent of blossoming flowers that fills the air, so this is a good period of the year to visit Sicily.

In summer you can enjoy the performances held in some of the ancient sites and spend some time at beautiful beaches and seaside towns. You just need to get prepared for high temperatures, bringing sunglasses, hats, water, and sun cream if you plan to visit the archaeological sites during the day.

Check if the sites are open in the evenings: oftentimes, during summer, it is possible to start the tour at sunset, which is quite an experience.

September and October are also good months to visit the sites when Sicily is less crowded, while winter temperatures are still mild.

So, all considered, Sicily is a good destination for every season!

How much time do you need to visit the archaeological parks?

The time you spend visiting the archaeological parks depends much on how big the area is and how interested you are in each of the monuments there located. However, consider a minimum of 2 hours which can go up to 4 or even 5 hours for larger sites like Selinunte, which is the largest in Europe.

In addition to the visiting time, you should consider the travel time as the archaeological parks are usually located far from city centers, except for Taormina Greek-Roman Theater.

You might need some extra time at the entrances as, even if you book your tickets online, you still might need to wait before you can start a visit.

Therefore, for the best experience, we suggest you book your tours with a local agent so that you have your chauffeur, your private guide, and your tickets ready to enjoy a smooth tour.

A good guide can show you the most remarkable sites leading you through the best itineraries possible. On average, guided tours inside these ancient sites last approximately two hours unless you specifically require planning otherwise.

In Sicily, travelers can find some of the best archaeological sites in Europe and, at the same time, enjoy all the history, culture, traditions, good food, and wine that the island has to offer.

Several different thematic itineraries are possible, and by browsing our website, you will see some inspiring examples.

Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica

Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica are both listed among the UNESCO sites of Sicily.

Syracuse has its historical center on the island of Ortygia, its original Greek nucleus is now connected to the city through two large bridges.

This beautiful city located on the sea was one of the most important cities in the history of the Mediterranean civilization. It is certainly to be included in a tour of the Eastern side of Sicily.

Indeed, Syracuse has a very rich history as it was founded by the Greeks and then dominated by the Romans, Byzantines, Barbarians, Arabs, and Normans. This history is testified by its many well-preserved buildings.

The Duomo in Ortygia is built on what was a former temple devoted to Athena, so the columns of the temple are now located in the basement of the cathedral.

Also worth visiting is the Fountain of Arethusa, at the center of Ortygia, a natural fountain dedicated to the nymph Arethusa, one of the characters in the tales of Greek mythology. The area is planted with beautiful papyrus.

You can complete your visit to ancient Syracuse with a guided walk along the lovely alleys of the baroque-style historical center and the Jewish quarter.

The Necropolis of Pantalica is instead located at an approximately 45-minute drive from Syracuse, so you will need a transfer by private car to reach the site.

On the road to the necropolis, you will see the Euryalus Fortress, which was essential for the fortifications of the ancient Greek Syracuse.

The Necropolis contains over 5,000 tombs cut into the rock dating from the 13th to 7th centuries BC. In association with the tombs, you will also see the remains of ancient Greek dwellings as well as other Byzantine ruins – the foundations of the Anaktoron, which is the Prince’s Palace.

Why Syracuse archaeological sites are worth visiting

Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica together are a unique testimony of civilizations developed in the Mediterranean Sea over three millennia!

This makes them one of the best ancient sites to visit in Sicily.

Ideas for a full itinerary, including Syracuse

If you love archaeology and the ancient classical world, you might combine the visit to Syracuse and Ortygia with the Neapolis Archaeological Park, which we mention here below.

You might also combine Syracuse with the baroque Ragusa and Noto and consider some beach sites in case you plan to visit Sicily during summer.

To add a special twist to your travel program, consider a full tour of Sicily with all of its remarkable destinations easily reached on board a luxury yacht. If you like this idea, you might take a look at our sample itinerary of Sicily circumnavigation by yacht, which can be adapted according to the time at your disposal and your specific needs.

If you are planning to stay in Syracuse, we suggest the Ortea Palace Hotel, a good five-star hotel in the center of the city.

Neapolis Archaeological Park

This archaeological park located on Tremenite Hill, just outside Syracuse, is a natural oasis where the most important ancient remains of the area are kept and protected.

Among the fascinating sites inside the park, there are three masterpieces:

The Greek Theater curved in the rock of Tremenite Hill. This was one of the best-renowned monuments of the ancient world and one of the largest theaters ever built. It was used both in Greek and Roman times.

The Ear of Dionysius, a limestone cave with a special echo and a shape resembling a giant ear. The name was invented by the famous painter Caravaggio since the shape of the cave resembles an ear and because of the acoustic. According to a legend, the tyrant Dionysius used the cave as a prison for political dissidents.

Latomia of Paradise, one of the stone quarries where prisoners were sentenced to forced labor. This part of the park is perfect to enjoy its lush vegetation made of lemon and orange trees, capers, palms, and prickly pears.

There are more interesting sites along the archaeological itinerary inside the park, such as The Altar of Hieron – the largest known altar of antiquity, the Roman amphitheater, and the Cordari Cave.

Why is Neapolis Archaeological Park worth visiting?

The Neapolis archaeological site in Syracuse combines the beauty of the local natural environment with the astounding testimonies of ancient history.

It was one of the stops on the Grand Tour in the 17th and 18th centuries when upper-class young European men used to travel through Europe as soon as they came of age.

Ideas for a full itinerary in Eastern Sicily

The Neapolis Archaeological Site is in the area around Syracuse, so you can perfectly combine it with a tour of Ortygia.

You might then travel north in the footsteps of the romantic young European travelers who used to spend some months touring Italy. This was the so-called Grand Tour, a way for the upper class to educate young men and guide them to the appreciation of beauty, art, and history.

Traveling north, you might add Catania – a large city rich in noble palaces and historical buildings, Taormina, and Mount Etna to your program.

You might take a look at the itinerary of our exclusive Grand Tour that we propose also as an inspiration for a bespoke tour of Sicily for our international clientele.

The Ancient Theater of Taormina

Taormina is probably one of the best-renowned cities in Sicily. The historical city center is located on top of a hill dominating the coast, and the ancient theater is right there in the center, a landmark of the city.

From different areas inside the theater, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Etna, the bay of Naxos and Taormina, and even the Calabrian coast with the Strait of Messina.

The theater was originally Greek, built in the 3rd century BC, rebuilt and changed to become an amphitheater in Roman times.

The stage was removed and turned into an arena for combat shows between gladiators and ferocious animals.

After a long period of decline in the Middle Ages, the theater came back to life as one of the favorite stops of travelers on the Grand Tour.

Originally the theater could hold up to 10 thousand spectators, while today, it reaches 4500. The theater is still used during the summer season for concerts, a special experience you might want to include in your travel plan.

Why Taormina’s ancient theater is worth visiting

The enchanting view, combined with the beauty of the ancient remains, makes this archaeological site a must-see Sicilian landmark.

Furthermore, the theater is located right in the historical center of Taormina, and it is easy to include the visit in a guided walk around the city.

Ideas for activities in Taormina and the nearby

Taormina is a lovely city to visit and an excellent place to stay, also thanks to its renowned five-star hotels and a wide choice of very good restaurants.

This is also why we include Taormina in the different thematic itineraries we propose to our clients. It can be easily combined with a visit to the Etna Volcano and to the city of Catania, which is also the nearest airport.

While the historical center of Taormina is located on top of a hill, during summer, you might also want to visit the beaches of Taormina, down to sea level.

When you are in Taormina, you can also add something special to your travel plan, for example, an exclusive wine and food experience like our Michelin-starred cooking lab in Taormina.

Taormina is also the city in Sicily with the largest number of high-quality hotels.

The hotels we recommend are the Belmond Timeo, the Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, the Four Seasons San Domenico, and The Ashbee

In this article, we only listed the most important archaeological sites in eastern Sicily, and this means that there is so much more to see in Sicily!

You will need to set your priorities based on your interests and plan what to include in your travel.

Archaeological Area of Agrigento

The town of Agrigento was founded by the Greeks, and most of the archaeological park lies still under the fields, but part of it was excavated to become the site we can visit nowadays: the Valley of Temples.

Today visitors can walk through an impressive row of perfectly preserved Doric temples, walking in the footsteps of the Greek inhabitants of the ancient city. That is why this precious historic site is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Valley of the Temples is characterized by the remains of Doric temples and sanctuaries. Outside the walls, it also includes a large necropolis as well as some hydraulic works, fortifications, and two important Agora.

The attribution of the temples to gods and goddesses is uncertain, and we call them names deriving from the speculations of scholars even though, in some cases, we know that those speculations were incorrect.

The Temple of the Dioscuri consists of 4 columns in the shape of an L. This is what is left after earthquakes and fire. Nonetheless, this temple is one of the most renowned, as it is today the symbol of Agrigento.

The Temple of Concordia along the Via Sacra – the sacred road – is one of the best-preserved temples, which even impressed Goethe while he was in Sicily for his Grand Tour of Italy. Like almost all Greek temples, it is aligned in an east-west direction. In particular, studies have been carried out in the past on its archaea-astronomic alignment with the rising of the sun during the spring equinox.

The Temple of Hera Lacinia, or the Temple of Juno, is an archaic Doric temple. Archaeologists have found the signs of a fire that followed the Siege of Akragas, the ancient Agrigento, in 406 BC.

The temple of Aesculapius, built outside the walls, was a place of pilgrimage for sick people. The walls were covered with the writings of the sick who had been healed.

The temple of Olympian Zeus, or Jupiter, was the largest temple in the ancient known world, but it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1401. Here gigantic statues named Telamons were used as columns – a copy of Telamons is kept inside the park, while the original ones are in the archaeological museum of Agrigento.

The temple of Heracles, or Hercules, was the oldest one, but today only eight columns are still standing.

The temple of Vulcano is not well preserved, and today we can only see its foundations.

The tomb of Theron, a large pyramid-shaped tuff monument, is thought to have been erected as a memorial to the fallen in the Second Punic War.

Concordia Temple in the archaeological site of Agrigento

Why is the Archaeological Area of Agrigento worth visiting?

The Valley of Temples is one of the top ancient sites in Sicily worth visiting because the temples and the remains of the ancient settlement have remained as they were originally, never changed or converted in the course of history.

This makes Agrigento one of the most impressive examples of Doric architecture and Greek culture in the entire world.

Kolymbetra Garden

When visiting the Valley of Temples, you should not miss the Kolimbethra Garden.

This is a very special garden located inside the valley, also known as the Garden of Gods, and originally built under the tyrant Theron as a water reserve for the city.

In fact, 2500 years ago, the garden was a water tank used as a pool by the inhabitants of the city, and women used to gather there and wash clothes.

The water feeding the pool came through a number of artificial tunnels and chambers dug by the slaves captured in battle. These tunnels collected the waters that oozed from porous rock, the calcarenite, to convey them from the hill to the Kolymbetra basin, thus feeding the pool.

A century later, the pool was transformed into a garden, and the water coming through the tunnel was used to water plants.

It was abandoned for some time and finally flourished again, thanks to some private investments to become the beautiful garden it is today.

Visiting the garden now, you can admire citrus groves, olive and almond trees, and a mix of other vegetation typical of the Mediterranean bush

In addition, it is possible to privately visit the system of hypogea, the underground chambers, with the necessary safety equipment for an approximately 40 minutes tour, which needs to be arranged in advance and pre-booked.

If you like gardens, you should not miss the other famous Gardens of Sicily.

Ideas for a full itinerary including Agrigento

If you plan to visit Agrigento, you might consider flying to Palermo and combining the visit to the capital of Sicily with the Valley of Temples.

Agrigento fits well in a full exploration of the west Sicilian coast or even in a tour around the whole island if you have enough time at your disposal – usually at least two weeks.

If you like the idea of visiting more UNESCO sites in Sicily, our luxury tour of UNESCO World Heritage Treasures of Sicily might be inspiring for you.

The best option for accommodation in the area is the Hotel Villa Athena, one of the best hotels in Sicily (link), located right inside the Archaeological Park.

Selinunte Archaeological Park

Selinunte was an ancient Greek city founded in what is now the area around Trapani. The city had a short life, only 240 years.

In the year 409 b.C., the Carthaginians destroyed the city with an army of 5,800 men: 16,000 citizens were killed, 5,000 were enslaved, and 2,600 escaped to Agrigento.

The archaeological park shows what is left after the destruction due to the Carthaginians, as well as several earthquakes and centuries of neglect.

The ancient site is one of the largest in Europe, and we recommend having a private guide show the most important sites in about 2 hours. A full visit could last 4 or 5 hours.

The areas of the ancient site include:

The Acropolis, the highest part of the city, is where visitors can walk along the ancient roads amid the remains of temples and fortifications, enjoying a magnificent view of the sea. Among the temples are also the ruins of a Byzantine village.

The Necropolis, with three main burial areas: Buffa, Galera Bagliazzo, and Pipio Bresciana, together with Manicalunga Timpone Nero. In these areas, archaeologists found interesting evidence of the burial ceremonies.

Gaggera Hill, with the remains of the oldest Selinuntine sanctuary dedicated to Dèmetra Malophòros, the goddess of fertility.

Mannuzza Hill, in the north with ancient housing, is an area where only a few selected excavations have been completed.

The East Hill in the east, with three ancient temples named Temple E, Temple F, and Temple G.

Cave di Cusa, the stone quarries from which the material for the buildings in Selinunte was extracted. The extraction works were suddenly interrupted when in 409 b.C., the Carthaginian army defeated Selinunte after a 9-day siege.

Most of the artifacts found in the Selinunte area are preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Palermo, which is worth a visit for those who are passionate about archaeology.

Why is Selinunte worth visiting?

The ancient site of Selinunte is the largest archaeological park in Europe.

Here visitors can walk along the ancient roads of the Acropolis, among the remains of temples and fortifications, which revealed much about the life, religion, and rites of the ancient Greeks. The site also offers great panoramic views over the sea.

Ideas for a travel program, including Selinunte

Selinunte is located on the northwestern coast of Sicily.

The visit can be combined with other famous cities in that area for a tailor-made itinerary, including Marsala, famous for its wine production, the enchanting village of Erice, the archaeological site of Segesta, and Palermo of course.

If you are fond of ancient civilizations, you might want to visit the archaeological museum of Palermo.

For golf lovers, we propose a special combination of Golf and Culture: must-see destinations on the western coast and award-winning golf courses, luxury seaside hotels, and excellent food and wines.

While exploring the area of Selinunte, you might choose to stay at the Foresteria Planeta Estate, a beautiful wine resort. You can find more information about Foresteria Planeta in our article on the hotels we recommend in Sicily (link).

Segesta Archaeological Park

Segesta was one of the major cities founded by the Elymians, an indigenous population probably of Italic origin. The city was never inhabited by a Greek population.

The excavations to investigate what was the structure of the city are still in progress. However, we know now that Segesta was originally made up of two acropolises and that the center of the city was not equipped with walls as it was defended by two natural, steep rocky walls.

Nowadays, the archaeological park consists of different areas, and the main monuments are:

The Doric temple. It is considered one of the most interesting of Magna Graecia. From the temple, visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the Gulf of Castellammare. The temple is at the center of a discussion among experts because it partly escapes the usual historical-architectural classification.

The theater of Segesta. It is considered one of the most beautiful examples of an amphitheater of the classical period, and it is very well preserved. Thanks to its suggestive position and perfect sound amplification, the Segesta theater is still in use for special theatrical and musical performances.

Why Segesta Archaeological Park is worth visiting

The archaeological site of Segesta is among the best preserved in all of Sicily, despite the numerous transformations it has undergone through the centuries.

It is certainly one of the most evocative places thanks to the view and its position on the mountain.

The ancient temple of Segesta

Ideas for an itinerary including Segesta

It is possible to combine a visit to Segesta in the morning with a tour of the lovely medieval village of Erice in the afternoon.

On the next day, you might go further and visit Selinunte and Agrigento.

If you have many days at your disposal, you can consider visiting more destinations on the west coast, like Marsala and Trapani.

In case you have two entire weeks at your disposal, you might plan for a circumnavigation of the whole island of Sicily.

Or you might even consider a combination of the best sites of the Amalfi Coast and Sicily – this is the itinerary we propose, and it can be adjusted according to your needs.

Villa Romana del Casale, The Mosaics of Piazza Armerina

The Villa Romana del Casale is a large ancient Roman villa outside the city of Piazza Armerina, which is technically in the center of the island of Sicily, only slightly closer to the eastern coast.

The villa we can see now is a one-story building with a monumental entrance and an area dedicated to thermal baths. It was so large that it could be considered a small citadel.

It certainly underwent many transformations, and this is also why it is difficult for historians to determine who was the owner of the estate. However, we know that the agricultural estate on which this villa was built was called the Filosofiana.

We also know that the Western Roman Empire was based on agriculture, so it was common to see luxury villas in rural areas. For the ancient Romans, every villa – no matter if built as a holiday site, located by the sea, or in the countryside, had to be productive.

Villa Romana del Casale today is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an example of a luxury Roman villa.

Why is Villa Romana del Casale famous?

The Villa Romana del Casale is famous for its magnificent mosaics of exceptional quality. It is also known as “mosaics of Piazza Armerina”. This is one of the reasons why the Villa Romana del Casale was inscribed by the UNESCO commission. Another reason is that it perfectly shows the predominant social and economic structure of its age.

Ancient mosaics at Villa del Casale, Piazza Armerina

Ideas for a full program, including Piazza Armerina

The visit to the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina can be combined with a tour of Caltagirone, a town famous for its ceramic and terracotta.

You might then continue to Ragusa, a city famous for its baroque-style buildings, and then proceeding southwards from Ragusa, you can also stop in Modica and Scicli.

We propose special food-related experiences in that area, like tasting a typical and unique type of chocolate made according to an ancient Aztec recipe in the town of Modica and a multisensorial experience with herbs, spices, and cooking in a kitchen garden in the Scicli countryside. All these experiences can be fully customized.

We suggest visiting at least some of the most important archaeological sites in eastern Sicily as this side of the island is equally rich in history, traditions, and art as the western side.

Good planning will help you enjoy some of the best experiences you can have when traveling to Italy.

We have selected the top 10 places to see in Sicily. These are must-see sights worth a special dedicated trip or D-tour:

The Etna volcano and its exceptional environment.

The UNESCO-protected Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. This cluster of eight towns in south-eastern Sicily was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake.
Sicily’s major cities

There are nine provincial capitals on the island, seven of which can be considered Sicily’s major cities for the number of interesting monuments and destinations worth seeing in their areas.

Palermo

The capital city of the region. It is rich in Arab-Norman architecture, lavish palazzos, and gardens. A complete tour of Palermo is a must. Allow two full days to visit the city’s different monuments and taste the local delicacies.

Palermo

Trapani

Trapani is worth visiting for its baroque city center, and the Colombaia, a medieval fortress. The town hosts a famous couscous festival every year in September, as couscous is indeed a delicious and popular local dish.

Catania

This is a major city on the eastern coast, famous for its baroque architecture, noble palaces, and famous fish market.

Agrigento

A city located on the island’s western side. This city is best known for its vast archeological park, the Valley of Temples.

Syracuse

Syracuse is one of the Sicilian towns with the most extended history. It hosts an ancient Necropolis for its rich Greek and Roman history and its archaeological park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sicily

Ragusa

The city, with the ancient hilltop district, Ragusa Ibla, features a remarkable collection of baroque-style buildings (in the featured image). Meanwhile, Ragusa Superiore, the city’s more modern section, is home to the ornate Ragusa Cathedral.

Five hidden gems of Sicily

So far, we have considered the most popular destinations. Now is the time to uncover five hidden gems spread throughout the island that only the most sophisticated connoisseurs have visited.

Piazza Armerina

The impressive, well-preserved mosaics of the Sicily historical site Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina are one of the best archaeological sites to visit in Sicily. The mosaics cover a surface of 3000 square meters, approximately 32,300 square feet. Note that Piazza Armerina is located in the inner part of Sicily and requires a dedicated trip.

Mosaics in Villa del Casale, Piazza Armerina

Erice

A medieval hilltop town connected to Trapani by cable car, Erice has over 800 years of history. It still shows traces of ancient Phoenician, Greek, and Roman civilizations today. Its main attraction is the impressive Norman castle, built in the 12th century. For a romantic stroll, go to the Giardino del Balio, a colorful garden filled with exotic plants and flowers.

Erice offers magnificent views over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the surrounding countryside, and it is also known for its almond pastries, a must-try when visiting the town!

Scala dei Turchi

The Stair of the Turks, or Scala dei Turchi, is located near Agrigento. This is a natural wonder where erosion has carved steps out of limestone.

In fact, the unique geological formation was created by thousands of years of wind and water erosion on brilliant white limestone, forming a series of steps that resemble a natural staircase leading down to the turquoise waters of the sea.

The view from the top of the stairs is awe-inspiring. It offers panoramic vistas of the Sicilian coastline that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Mozia

A Phoenician city on a small island off the coast of Marsala, Mozia, is only 45 hectares. Still, it is filled with archaeological ruins, including a rare and well-preserved Phoenician settlement. Mozia is also known for its beautiful salt flats and natural reserves, making it a unique destination for nature lovers.

Pantelleria

The black pearl of the Mediterranean, Pantelleria, is a volcanic island in the area of Trapani located between Sicily and Tunisia. Forbes recently included it among the must-see natural parks to visit in Italy.

The island offers hot springs, deep blue sea water, and a rocky coastline. Here the traditional rural buildings made out of volcanic stones, called Dammusi, have been restored and turned into tourist accommodations. Visitors can also admire the old sapling vine cultivated for generations, a model of grape production, awarded the title of Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.

Natural wonders of Sicily

Probably the best world-renowned natural wonder in Sicily is Etna Park. Home to Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, the park can be safely visited by cable cars, jeeps, quads, or bikes.

Visiting Mount Etna is a must for those seeking a more adventurous experience. Enjoy a scenic helicopter tour of the rugged terrain to have one of the best sights in Sicily. Or hike to the summit for an unforgettable island view.

Etna is also the tallest mountain in Sicily. In winter, you can ski at the two main ski resorts on the hill’s northern and southern sides.

The river Alcantara carved a spectacular gorge in the Etna’s lava flows. This site is named Gole dell’Alcantara. Today, it is part of the beautiful Alcantara River Park, hosting various plants, vegetation, and migratory birds.

Alcantara Gorge

Natural Reserves

Sicily is also well renowned for its sandy beaches and rocky coastline. One of the oldest protected nature reserves along the northern coast of Sicily, near Trapani, is the Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro.

If you are looking for active exploration, you can visit the reserve on foot. The reserve is accessible from San Vito Lo Capo or Scopello. The panoramic path runs along the sea and connects two sandy or pebble coves where swimming is possible.

You can consider a private yacht tour for a more comfortable exploration of the coast.

Equally worth visiting is the Vendicari Nature Reserve, around Siracusa. Explore it on foot or by bike to reach beaches and historical sites, or by boat to try some snorkeling.

Islands of Sicily

Among the natural wonders of Sicily, we need to mention its smaller islands. They all make perfect destinations for private yacht cruises.

For a laid-back experience, venture to the Aeolian Islands. This is a collection of seven volcanic islands, including Stromboli, Panarea, Lipari e Vulcano. Here you will find some of the most transparent waters and beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean, as well as a lively nightlife.

The Egadi islands are perfect for nature and beach lovers. The best renowned are the islands of Favignana and Levanzo, rich in marine flora and fauna, sea caves, and historical evidence. The most impressive example is the Genoese cave, a cave with pictorial evidence dating back to Paleolithic era.

Finally, the Pelagie islands are the southernmost islands of Sicily with a subtropical climate. In one of these tiny islands, Linosa, it is possible to observe sea turtles.

How to reach your destination in Sicily

Private flights to Sicily have become increasingly popular in recent years, ranking the island among the top 50 major aviation destinations. The convenience and flexibility of private aviation make it an ideal choice for high-end tourists looking to explore Sicily.

Using a private jet, you can fly to Palermo, the region’s capital city on the northwestern coast. Or you can land in Catania, a city with the most important airport on the island and among the top 3 in Italy, a destination conveniently located mid-way on the eastern coast of Sicily. From here, you can continue to Taormina and Mount Etna in the north, and Syracuse in the south.

Regular flights connect Sicily to most of the main capitals in Europe, like London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Rome. Trapani, on the west coast, and Comiso, on the southernmost tip of Sicily, are two additional small airports available for scheduled flights.

Sicily can also be reached on board super yachts for a private cruise of the Mediterranean.

Once you are in Sicily, there are two good ways to travel around the island:

– By private car, and we suggest having a chauffeur drive you around.

– On a private yacht with crew.

Exploring Sicily on a private yacht: Ferretti yacht custom line 97

The best part of Sicily

A common question is: which part of Sicily is the best to visit? Many places on the island are worth visiting. If you really have to choose only one side of Sicily, consider spending a few days on the eastern coast.

Taormina is a picturesque small town, offering the widest variety of luxury hotels and refined restaurants. It makes an excellent starting point for exploring the surroundings. Taormina is renowned for its beautiful views over the bay, the ancient Greek theater, and the lovely beaches.

Sicily can offer a wealth of unique destinations for travelers seeking an authentic and unforgettable experience. Whether exploring ancient ruins, soaking in thermal baths, or simply savoring a glass of local wine, Sicily promises to surprise and delight you at every turn.

The Archaeological Park of Agrigento

This archaeological park on the Western side of Sicily is unique in Europe. Thanks to the local Greek colony’s substantial, well-preserved remains, it was inscribed in the UNESCO list.

The site is also known as the Valley of the Temples. In fact, it is home to a collection of precious ancient Greek temples. The Temple of Concordia, for example, is considered one of the best-preserved Greek Doric temples in the world.

Enrich your visit to the Valley of Temples

Inside the archaeological area of Agrigento, the garden of Kolymbethra is an oasis of lush greenery worth visiting. The underground chambers of the garden can be privately visited with pre-booking and necessary safety equipment for a 40-minute tour.

If you plan to celebrate something special during your stay in Sicily, consider the Kolymbethra. Here you can have a private dinner in the garden among the beautiful citrus trees, figs, and other Mediterranean plants.

This makes Kolymbethra an idyllic, romantic place that is also suitable for a marriage proposal!

Private event set in the Kolymbethra Garden

What to do near Agrigento

Golfers can indulge in a round at the Verdura Golf and SPA Resort’s championship courses. The resort is located in the nearby town of Sciacca, directly on the sea. Here you can sunbathe and relax or enjoy a body massage with oils and aromatic infusions from sun-drenched local flora.

From Sciacca, you can leave for a helicopter tour to Mount Etna, for a daily excursion.

Wine lovers can reach the Feudo Principi di Butera in a 90-minute drive, a fortified manor with 180 hectares of vineyards.

The Arab-Norman Palermo

Palermo has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list for its blend of Arab and Norman heritage.

The city’s buildings in Arab-Norman style are:

Royal Palace, or Palazzo dei Normanni, and the Palatine Chapel

Palermo Cathedral

the Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti.

Zisa Palace

Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, also known as Martorana

Church of San Cataldo

Arab-Norman Church of San Cataldo in Palermo

Enrich your experience of Palermo

Palermo’s noble families have left a lasting impression on the city’s cultural heritage with their grand palaces and artwork. Many palaces have been transformed into museums, galleries, and public spaces, offering a glimpse into Sicily’s past.

Ask your private guide to show you Palazzo Abatellis, the Regional Gallery of Sicily, and Palazzo Mirto, the Museum of Decorative Arts.

Pay a visit to Palazzo Gangi, which served as a backdrop to the movie classic “The Leopard.” Also, consider spending a night or two in the lesser-known Villa Tasca. The villa and its stunning garden with fountains can be booked for your stay or for your private event.

Food lovers will appreciate the opportunity of having a hands-on cooking class in one of Palermo’s noble palaces.

For a further taste of opulence, visit the Florio family’s properties. The Florios were wealthy and influential members of Palermo high society portrayed in the historical novel “The Florios – Sicily’s Lions.” Their Villa Igiea is the best luxury hotel in Palermo. A stunning location to be also considered to enjoy an aperitif in the liberty-style bar or on the terrace overlooking the bay.

Taste your way through the city’s street food scene in a completely different scenario. Step into the Vucciria market and experience its colors, sounds, and smells. End your tour with lunch or dinner at Gagini, a restaurant with one Michelin star.

What to do near Palermo

The singular combination of Arab-Norman style protected by UNESCO can also be found in the nearby Monreale and Cefalù.

The highlight of a trip to Monreale is undoubtedly the Cathedral, with the golden Byzantine mosaics that cover its walls. Foodies will love the delicious local cuisine, including fresh seafood, excellent crunchy bread, biscuits, and the local plums and pumpkins.

Cefalù is a renowned beach destination at a one-hour drive from Palermo. After a visit to its cathedral, go through this fishermen’s borough’s winding streets and alleys. You can stop at a local trattoria or savor a delicious mulberry granita.

Mount Etna

This iconic Sicilian landmark towers over the island. Its influence on volcanology, geophysics, and other earth science disciplines is the reason why it is protected today by UNESCO.

As it is the highest active volcano in Europe, Etna (in the featured image) offers many opportunities for exploration and adventure. You can take a tour guided by expert environmental guides who will safely lead you up to the main crater. Adventure seekers can explore the rugged terrain of Mount Etna by jeep, quad, bike, or hiking.

You can also consider taking a helicopter tour to see the volcano from above.

Helicopter tours in Sicily

Enrich your experience of Mount Etna

Nature lovers will appreciate the surrounding countryside, a veritable paradise with lush forests, sparkling lakes, and ancient vineyards.

In particular, the valley where the Alcantara River flows through a deep gorge, surrounded by towering cliffs, is worth visiting. If you feel adventurous, you can explore the Valley on board a 4×4 jeep or by quad. For sports lovers, this is a paradise for rafting, river trekking, and horse riding.

Here golf lovers can experiment with the Picciolo Golf Club. This is the only golf course built on an active volcano, in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The course is situated on the dark, lava-stone residue from the 1916 eruption of Mount Etna. It was designed with the utmost respect for the natural environment and the volcanic terrain.

What to do near Mount Etna

Plenty of tours can perfectly combine with Mount Etna and its surroundings.

Wine and spirits enthusiasts can indulge in a visit to the vineyards along the Mount Etna wine road. The volcanic soil and unique microclimate are perfect for growing exceptional grapes that produce exquisite wines. The grapes cultivated in this area produce the d.o.c. wines Etna Rosso, Etna Bianco, Etna Rosato and some outstanding sparkling wines produced according to the classic method.

If you are looking for top-level hotels and restaurants, visit the nearby towns of Taormina. Enjoy its views over the bay, visit the renowned Greek theater, and try a Michelin-starred cooking lab in town.

You might also want to go further south to visit more UNESCO sites.

Michelin starred cooking lab

The city of Syracuse, for example, is a treasure trove of Roman and Greek art and culture.

Visitors can explore the charming island of Ortygia and visit the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the Ear of Dionysius. And the visit can continue with the monuments of the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica UNESCO site. This is a naturalistic and archaeological locality also in the area of Syracuse.

The site is located in Piazza Armerina, one hour and a half drive from Catania and Agrigento.

One of the most impressive rooms in the villa is the Great Hunt. This large hall features a mosaic that spans over 200 square meters with a hunting scene. Another must-see room is the famous Bikini Girls mosaic, which has become an icon of ancient Roman art. The mosaic depicts young women wearing bikinis and engaging in various sports, including weightlifting, discus throwing, and ball games.

The Aeolian Islands, located in the Northeast of Sicily, is a group of seven islands of volcanic origin. Their ongoing geological processes have greatly contributed to the field of volcanology.

The islands are named after Aeolus, the god of the winds, and it’s not hard to see why. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the islands are perfect for sailing and windsurfing. Yachting enthusiasts can enjoy private cruises around the Aeolian Islands, reaching the eastern coast of Sicily and Malta.
Taormina has become a favorite destination for the world’s elite, a must-see small town nestled on the eastern coast of Sicily. Thanks to its charming narrow streets, stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, and rich history dating back to the ancient Greeks, in fact, the city is a not-to-be-missed destination in every Gran Tour of Sicily.

The town is divided into two parts: Taormina, the city’s higher section, the main historical area. Here the best-renowned attractions and the most stylish hotels and restaurants are located. Taormina Mare, instead, at sea level, is home to a beautiful pebbly beach.

The two parts are connected by a cable car during summer and by a winding road that offers breathtaking sea views over the Mediterranean.

What to do in one day at Taormina

Your Taormina itinerary for one day will certainly start with a stroll along the Corso Umberto with your private guide.

Corso Umberto is the main street lined with elegant boutiques and cafes. Your guided tour will undoubtedly start with a visit to the ancient Greek Theatre, one of the most important archaeological sites in eastern Sicily, characterized by a stunning backdrop of Mount Etna.

Continue exploring the town’s historic churches and palaces, including the beautiful Palazzo Corvaja.

Time to enjoy lunch at one of the town’s excellent restaurants, savoring the local specialties like pasta alla Norma or swordfish with caponata. Then try some shopping on Corso Umberto and take the time to enjoy an ice cream break.

End your day with a relaxing walk in the town’s public gardens, Parco Trevelyan, to enjoy the stunning views of the sea and the city before savoring the best fine dining at one of the Michelin-starred restaurants in Taormina.

The Greek Theater of Taormina

You cannot miss a guided tour of the Greek Theater, one of the most iconic landmarks in Taormina. This ancient theater was built in the third century B.C. and still stands today. The theater is known for its stunning views of Mount Etna and the sea. During summer, it is also a popular venue for unique concerts and special events.

Palazzo Corvaja

Palazzo Corvaja is a magnificent architectural gem dating back to the 13th century. The palazzo’s distinctive blend of Gothic, Norman, and Arabic design elements makes it one of the city’s landmarks. Today, the palazzo houses the Museum of Arts and Crafts, showcasing Sicily’s traditional handicrafts.

Church of Santa Caterina

Another must-see historical building in Taormina is the Church of Santa. This is a stunning Baroque church in the heart of the town. The church was built on the ruins of a small Roman theater, which in turn had been built on an even more primitive Greek temple dedicated to Aphrodite!

Church of San Pancrazio

San Pancrazio is patron of Taormina. The Church to him dedicated was first constructed between the 6th and 9th centuries and incorporated the ruins of a pre-existing Greek temple. In the 1600s, the building was enlarged and decorated in the Baroque style, reflecting the prevailing taste of the time.

The Naumachia

During your walk in Taormina’s center, look at the Naumachia. A sizeable Roman construction was built in the second century A.D. near the ancient Forum in Taormina, Sicily. It consisted of a brick retaining wall and served as a water cistern with 18 large and small niches that probably contained fountains and statues of gods and heroes.

Piazza IX Aprile

As Taormina’s most sophisticated gathering spot, Piazza IX Aprile boasts a vibrant atmosphere, with open-air bars and local artists capturing portraits and landscapes on canvas. The balcony overlooking the square offers a breathtaking panoramic view, encompassing the majestic Mount Etna, the stunning Naxos Bay, and the ancient ruins of Taormina’s theater.

Once a functioning monastery, the San Domenico Palace is today a luxury hotel. The 40 monks’ cells were converted into guest rooms, and the building was expanded, but the two original cloisters remain.

This is the moment to take a break at the bar of the hotel, located in the main cloister, which now serves as a stunning oasis of tranquility in the heart of Taormina.

Piazza Duomo

The imposing Duomo building defines Piazza Duomo. This building, unlike typical churches, resembles a fortress with a magnificent rose window made of fine Syracuse stone. Additionally, the Baroque fountain named “Quattro Fontane” was constructed in front of the cathedral in 1635. Its name, meaning “Four fountains,” derives from the four small columns and seahorses decorating the fountain.

Palazzo dei Duchi di Santo Stefano

This impressive structure is a remarkable Sicilian Gothic example that has undergone several transformations over the centuries, including damage from the 1908 earthquake and World War II bombings. Now, it serves as a venue to showcase the works of the artist Giuseppe Mazzullo who produced sculptures in various styles and materials throughout his career.

Taormina and its surroundings offer a variety of alternatives to enjoy the local atmosphere according to your preferences.

Gourmet travelers will appreciate a unique cooking experience with one of the Michelin-starred chefs of the region. This is an occasion not only to reveal some behind-the-scenes secrets of a renowned chef but also to get familiar with the fresh local ingredients.

For a more traditional and immersive culinary experience, head to the Alcantara Gorges area. First, explore this natural wonder: a natural canyon carved out over thousands of years by volcanic activity and the flow of the Alcantara River, with impressive rock formations, crystal-clear waterfalls, and refreshing natural pools. Then, spend a few hours in the nearby ancient village in the company of local “mammas” – mothers who are passionate about preserving traditional cuisine. These hospitable ladies offer a home cooking project, where they prepare delicious local dishes using only fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from the area.

Fans of The Godfather trilogy should experience a unique cinematic tour by visiting Michael Corleone’s house from the first film and the charming village of Savoca, where several iconic scenes were shot. You will catch a glimpse of the captivating world of The Godfather and walk in the footsteps of your favorite characters.

Finally, relax and experience blissful moments of tranquility and beauty, enjoying the view over Mount Etna and the bay of Taormina from the arts and crafts historical garden, a private garden with its stunning blend of Mediterranean and English flora featuring exotic trees, colorful flowers, and fragrant herbs.

The garden surrounds a historic villa famous for its dining room, the only interior still in existence designed in 1910 by Sir Frank Brangwyn, a Royal Academician, and hidden away for over a hundred years because it addressed, in the Art Nouveau decoration of the murals, a topic that is still controversial and debated today, homogenous parenthood.

To make the most of your time, experience Palermo in absolute comfort, a key consideration, particularly during the hot summer months. Opt for an early morning or evening guided stroll through the city’s historic heart when temperatures are milder. For an effortless exploration of the town during the heat of the day, carry on your adventure in a comfortable chauffeur-driven vehicle.

Attempting to navigate Palermo in a rented car you drive may prove to be a complex task, given the city’s bustling traffic, limited parking, and strict city center traffic restrictions.

Start with a guided walk in the old city, from Quattro Canti to Bellini Square, then continue visiting the Arab-Norman style monuments listed among the UNESCO sites for their peculiar historical and architectural heritage.

We have carefully curated for you a selection of Palermo’s most iconic sights, with an added touch of local culture and tradition. We aim to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the city, particularly if you’re exploring Palermo for the first time!

Now, venture further into Pretoria Square, a few steps away from Quattro Canti. The square is characterized by the Praetorian Palace, a Renaissance building that hosts the municipality of Palermo, and by the Praetorian Fountain or Fontana Pretoria.

Statues of the twelve major Greek deities, mythological figures, animals, and rivers decorate the fountain, also known by another name: the Fountain of Shame. Why? Someone says that the name derives from the nudity of its statues. Someone says the shame was in the extraordinarily high price paid for the fountain!

What is special here: It may sound incredible, but the beautiful fountain, located right at the center of the square, was built in Florence in 1544. It was subsequently sold by its owner, Luigi de Toledo, who was deep in debt and needed money. So, the fountain was dissembled into more than 600 pieces and relocated to Palermo.

Bellini Square

Walking a bit further, moving at the back of the Praetorian Palace, you reach Bellini Square. Get prepared for a surprising architecture!

You are about to experience first-hand the incredible blend of cultures of the city.

The square, in fact, shows the unique Arab-Norman architecture that developed in Palermo and its area as a testament to an extraordinary period in medieval times when diverse cultures coexisted harmoniously: Muslim, Byzantine, Latin, Jewish, Lombard, and French. The outstanding value of this well-preserved, peculiar architecture and the decorations and mosaics of the time is under the protection of UNESCO today.

What is special here: You will see two catholic churches bearing Muslim traits and Western characteristics simultaneously: the Church of San Cataldo and the Church of Martorana. The visit to the two churches will not take long and is worth entering.

The small Church of San Cataldo dates to 900 years ago.

As you approach the building, you will first notice the striking cubical shape and the pink-red domes that indeed beckon you to explore further. The simplicity of its exterior belies the incredible beauty that lies within it.

As you step inside, you are greeted by tranquility and simplicity enhanced by the white stone used for its interior.

What is special here: The simplicity of the walls that remarks and highlights the beauty of the floor decorated with polychrome inlays in marble and porphyry.

The Church of St. Mary of the Admiral (UNESCO Site)

This medieval church, also called Martorana, is an excellent example of Arab-Norman architecture decorated with splendid golden mosaics. One of the most remarkable features is, in fact, the stunning Byzantine mosaic portrait of Christ Pantocrator in the apse.

Today, the church belongs to the Italo-Albanian catholic community in Sicily.

What is special here: Apart from the church’, there is another unique detail. The liturgy is still officiated according to the Byzantine Rite in Albanian and Koine Greek, known as the language of the Bible because it was the language of the Greek translation of the Old Testament.

Linger a bit longer in this historic quarter named Kalsa and enter the Saint Catherine of Alexandria Monastery, right in front of the Churches of San Cataldo and Martorana. If you do not feel like visiting another church, and its monastery, head inside directly to I Segreti del Chiostro, literally meaning the Secrets of the Cloister. This is a unique pastry shop inside the monastery.

In ancient times, all aristocratic families in Palermo turned to nuns for their dessert. They used to go to the parlor of cloistered female monasteries and buy the delicacies made by the holy hands of the nuns handed over through a metal wheel as cloistered nuns had to avoid direct contact with people from outside. Each monastery had its specialty, and recipes were secret and orally transmitted.

What is special here: The desserts are made following the ancient recipes handed down by the nuns of the 21 cloistered monasteries of the city. At the cloister’s pastry shop, you can buy all sorts of traditional sweets such as the Martorana fruit, exquisite sweets made from marzipan, molded and tinted to resemble a variety of fruits perfectly. Also delicious are the ricotta-cheese cakes and cookies of all kinds.

Palermo Cathedral (UNESCO Site)

Now, if it is boiling, you might continue your visit by car. Otherwise, you can easily continue walking to reach two imposing landmarks of Palermo.

First stop at the Palermo Cathedral, a masterpiece of architectural fusion and a must-see monument.

The Cathedral was constructed on the site of an earlier Byzantine Basilica. It underwent several renovations and expansions throughout the centuries, resulting in its unique and captivating appearance.

The main façade is flanked by two impressive towers and is characterized by a striking central portico, an addition from the 15th century, which gives way to the original Norman portal. The Cathedral’s southern side showcases a stunning blend of Gothic-Catalan-style arches and towers.

You can reach the rooftop on foot for a comprehensive view of the city, but ascending can be challenging and may not be suitable for all individuals.

The interior of the Cathedral is equally captivating. The ceilings are adorned with beautiful frescoes, and the floor showcases exquisite mosaic work.

In summer, the monumental areas of the church can be visited in the evening on specific dates, always with a separate admission fee. In these monumental areas, in the crypt, you can find the royal tombs of the House of Hohenstaufen, including Emperor Frederick II and his father, Henry VI.

What is special here: The Cathedral is home to several chapels, including the Royal Chapel and the Chapel of Saint Rosalia, the city’s patron saint. The latter houses a silver shrine containing the Saint’s relics, making it a site of significant religious importance, also in connection with the most deeply rooted traditions of the city.

In fact, every year in July, the city comes alive with the ‘Festino,’ a grand celebration of Saint Rosalia that dates back to the 17th century.

The festival commemorates the Saint who, according to legend, appeared in a vision to a hunter during a plague and saved the city.

Today, the highlight of this much-loved festival is the procession of a grand chariot carrying a statue of Santa Rosalia through the city streets. It’s a vibrant spectacle of faith and a day of festivity culminating in the fireworks at La Cava, the harbor area.

Food tasting break in Palermo

As your morning exploration of Palermo winds down, it’s time to indulge in a delightful Sicilian culinary interlude, as tasting some local food specialties is part of the cultural experience. Pause your sightseeing and immerse yourself in the vibrant local gastronomy scene.

While you might prefer to have your lunch in a traditional restaurant, consider starting your gastronomic adventure with a taste of the local street food and, above all, with the legendary Arancine and the popular Panelle.

To complete your tasting of local specialties, add something sweet. The renowned Cannoli and the Cassata Siciliana are at the forefront, and of course, the local gelato is served in round brioches. Read more in our article dedicated to the Sicilian food.

Palatine Chapel (UNESCO site)

Conclude your one-day Palermo tour witnessing the Royal Palace’s grandeur, known as Palazzo dei Normanni, and the mesmerizing beauty of its Cappella Palatina, the Palatine Chapel.

The Royal Palace, once a seat of kings, emirs, and viceroys, showcases the eclectic blend of styles we mentioned for other historical sites in town. What will undoubtedly impress you is the jewel in the crown of the Royal Palace: the Palatine Chapel.

What is special here: Built by the Norman King Roger II, this chapel is decorated from floor to ceiling with golden mosaics. Also gorgeous is the characteristic wooden muqarnas ceiling, typical of the Arab world, and the elegant marble incrustations.

Allow yourself time to admire all the details and enjoy its unique atmosphere before leaving Palermo for your next exploration.

There are many more things to see in Palermo. Should your visit to the city extend for more than one day, check out our guide for delving deeper into the splendors of Palermo and its environs.

If you only have a few extra hours to explore the city, you should consider visiting two worth-visiting artistic jewels: Teatro Massimo and Oratorio di Santa Cita.

Teatro Massimo Opera House

The largest opera house in Italy, Teatro Massimo, is one of the landmarks of Palermo. The building is neoclassical – eclectic, decorated with columns, frescoes, and golden accents.

This opera house has been a cultural epicenter for over a century and has hosted numerous world-class performances, including operas, ballets, and concerts by renowned artists.

What is special here: The acoustic is excellent. During the guided visit to the monument, you can test it directly in round shaped Pompeian Hall, a room decorated in red and gold originally accessible to men only, which boasts a peculiar acoustic: standing in the center of the room, your will experience your voice being greatly amplified, while from outside the room, because of the massive reverberation, it is impossible to discern what you say.

Guided tour inside Teatro Massimo

Oratorio del Rosario di Santa Cita

Complete your Palermo itinerary with a visit to the Oratorio del Rosario di Santa Cita, an example of Baroque grandeur. To the discerned traveler, this oratory offers a deeper engagement in the peculiar art and elegance of the Sicilian Baroque era.

What is special here: Within the oratory room, the walls come alive with incredibly intricate stucco reliefs by the artist Giacomo Serpotta. Delicate, white, high-relief stucco sculptures depict various religious and historical scenes.

One of the most famous scenes represents the naval battle of Lepanto, a pivotal victory for the Western forces over the expansion in the Mediterranean of the Turkish fleet, aided by the superior artillery and technology of the Holy League, which included Spain and the Republic of Venice.

Zisa Palace (UNESCO Site)

We start this exploration from the Zisa, a majestic palace known as al-Azīzah, which draws inspiration from Islamic design principles, featuring horseshoe arches, geometric patterns, and ornamental details that embody beauty and refinement.

The palace was the royal summer residence in medieval times. Right in front of the court is a wide garden, Giardino della Zisa, offering a serene oasis in the heart of the bustling city.

What is special here: The building’s ground floor houses the central Sala della Fontana, Room of the Fountain, where the monarch held court. This room is particularly distinctive with its square layout and vaulted ceiling. The fountain is topped by a mosaic panel on a gold backdrop. Water trickles from it, flowing through a central channel and into a fishpond.

Botanical Garden

The Palermo Botanical Garden, founded in 1779, serves as both a botanical garden and a research institution. Walking

A walk in the garden is a serene and enchanting experience. As you explore its winding pathways, you are greeted by a display of diverse plant species worldwide. Among its prized possessions is a stunning collection of cacti and rare and endangered species of trees, shrubs, and flowers.

You can stroll amidst the lush greenery, which today is a delightful destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful escape.

It was initially just a small garden dedicated to medicinal plants, and over time, it expanded and now features various sections.

The park also houses the Herbarium, with extensive collections of Mediterranean plants and a gene bank focused on preserving endemic and endangered seeds.

What is special here: Choose the botanical garden for a very relaxing walk in nature and stop for an Italian espresso at the bar on the premises before you continue your exploration of Palermo, maybe with a visit to the nearby Palazzo Abatellis.

The Botanical Garden in Palermo

Palazzo Abatellis

This gothic-Catalan building hosts the Gallery of Art and is located in the heart of Palermo’s center, just a short walk from the Quattro Canti.

Originally built as a residence for the Abatellis family, it was then turned into a female monastery, and, after the significant damage suffered during an Allied air bombing in 1943, it was restored and repurposed as the Gallery of Medieval Art for the Sicilian region.

Palazzo Abatellis is a perfect choice whether you are planning a cultural holiday, as the Gallery includes precious ancient pieces of art and temporary exhibitions worldwide.

What is special here: Make sure not to miss the two most iconic masterpieces: the Virgin Annunciate, a beautiful painting by Antonello da Messina, and The Triumph of Death, a fresco that might have inspired Guernica, one of Picasso’s masterpieces.

Take a moment to pause in the Palazzo’s tranquil courtyard and then go to Cioccolateria Lorenzo, a tiny chocolate shop a stone’s throw from the Palazzo Abbatellis, where you can taste artisanal chocolates and cakes.

Movie stars and Aristocracy: private visits to exclusive mansions

The Sicilian aristocracy must have fascinated the cinema and television fiction world that selected noble mansions and period palazzos to shoot some famous scenes.

Indeed, in Palermo, you can visit the majestic, noble Rococo palace used for the filming of the grand ballroom scene in Luchino Visconti’s film, “The Leopard,” based on a classic Italian novel, which has also been just turned into a limited series for Netflix.

The original movie with Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale was shot in an architectural masterpiece built in 1780, whose owner was Prince Gangi. Today the palace is only open to private visits.

One more fabulous mansion deserves a visit, the lavish villa used as a backdrop for one of the episodes in the Emmy Award winners White Lotus 2.

What is special here: Even though the Renaissance villa is enriched with Murano chandeliers and gold-framed paintings, we invite you to focus your visit on its 20-acre gardens, which instead date back to the late 1800s. Known as one of the most beautiful historical gardens in Europe, it features a variety of exotic plants, ancient trees, and ornamental fountains.

The Grandeur of Teatro Massimo Opera House

The name “Monreale” derives from the combination of “monte-reale,” meaning “royal mountain,” which originated from the construction of a royal palace, likely corresponding to the location of the present-day town hall.

The town is world-renowned for its Cathedral. In walking distance from the Cathedral lays the Benedictine Cloister. Once inhabited by Benedictine monks, the cloister is renowned for its Romanesque architecture, featuring over 200 columns adorned with mosaics, Arabesque engravings, and biblical scenes. The cloister encompasses a quadrangular layout, with a central English-style lawn, four surrounding pathways, and a circular fountain known as the Fontana del Re.

While the Cathedral and the Cloister are undeniably the highlights, Monreale offers visitors a pleasant atmosphere. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the charming streets lined with quaint shops and traditional Sicilian restaurants. Taste freshly squeezed citrus fruits, the Monreale famous bread, the local wine, and the Buccellati, traditional cookies made with a sweet pastry dough and filled with a mixture of dried fruits, nuts, honey, and spices.

What is special here: The Duomo, a magnificent, impressive cathedral, a Norman-Byzantine structure of historical significance. The cathedral, included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale,” forms an essential part of the town’s archdiocese. Its architectural grandeur and impressive façade draw visitors from far and wide.

Cefalù

Outside Palermo lays Cefalù, a picturesque town nestled along the northern coast of Sicily, exuding an irresistible charm.

Its historical center, a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets and quaint alleys, transports you with its timeless atmosphere.

As you meander through its lanes, you’ll discover inviting trattorias serving mouthwatering local cuisine. Do not forget to taste a mulberry granita before you leave for your next exploration.

What is special here: The city has Greek origins, and it was under the Norman king Roger II that the construction of the magnificent Norman-style Cathedral was initiated. This cathedral is also part of the UNESCO site heritage, together with the Cathedral of Monreale and the Arab-Norman structures in Palermo.

The old town of Trapani is a pedestrian-friendly area adorned with splendid architecture in a mix of styles. All around, the predominant color is cream white.

The oldest streets where since 1200, the locals used to go walking are Via Garibaldi, Via Torrearsa, and Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

Throughout this itinerary, take the time to observe the elegant balconies and historical plaques and try to venture into a few side streets. The characteristic of Trapani’s historical center mainly lies in its charming atmosphere.

And if you walk in the old town on a summer evening, you will enjoy the warm lighting of the streets and the many cocktail bars and restaurants with al fresco dining.

What to see in Trapani

You can start your walk in the old town from Via Garibaldi, one of the central axis of Trapani’s historic center.

The street dated back to the 1300s and was meant to host civil and religious power structures. Here you are welcomed by beautiful buildings, like Palazzo Burgio of Barons of Xirinda, a sixteenth-century residence and headquarters of Banco di Sicilia.

Continue to Via Torrearsa, where you encounter “Porta Oscura,” an archway that was part of the medieval defensive walls, the oldest gateway still existing in the city. Next to the arch, you will also see the Clock Tower, an iconic city landmark that reveals all its charm when lit at night.

Now, walk until you reach the intersection with Corso Vittorio Emanuele, a street with noble residences developed in the 17th century. Approximately mid-way on this street, you can admire the majestic Trapani Cathedral, Cattedrale di San Lorenzo.

The historic center also houses architectural gems such as the churches of San Domenico and Sant’Agostino, and the remnants of the Chiaramonte palace, which reflect the Gothic-floral style born in Sicily under the powerful Chiaramonte family.

Also worth mentioning is the Church of Purgatorio. The church is renowned for the twenty groups of Mysteries – statues used in the Procession of the Mysteries. This historic procession took place over 400 years during Holy Week and features a twenty-four-hour-long reenactment of the Via Crucis.

Continue walking along Corso Vittorio Emanuele to the extreme western tip of Trapani and reach the Ligny Tower, a coastal watchtower built in 1672 to protect Trapani from Muslim pirates. Today it hosts a small museum, the Museo Civico Torre di Ligny.

From here, you can enjoy the picturesque views of the Mediterranean, watch the fishing boats, and take a leisurely break at one of the many restaurants for some fresh seafood.

Trapani Salt Pans

Trapani is famous for its salt pans, part of a WWF National Reserve. The area is of high environmental value, as it hosts a remarkable biological diversity, including rare plants and animals.

In fact, Trapani salt flats create a habitat that attracts 170 species of migratory birds, among which flamingos.

While spring and autumn are the best months to observe migratory birds, you can watch the salt harvesting activity from July to September.

Additionally, the reserve houses the Salt Museum in an old mill, showcasing traditional salt production tools.

We suggest you reach Trapani salt pans by a chauffeured car and have a private environmental guide to learn more about the local flora and fauna. You will need comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunglasses. Photography enthusiasts will love to visit the salt pans at sunset when the salt flats and the sea are tinged with red.

What to eat in Trapani: Gastronomic Delights

An emphasis on fresh seafood characterizes Trapani cuisine.

A must-try dish is “Couscous alla Trapanese,” a unique take on couscous which reflects Trapani’s historical ties with North Africa. The preparation involves flavoring steamed semolina grains with a rich fish broth, usually made with grouper, snapper, or bream and seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices.

Vegetarians can appreciate a different version of couscous with vegetables.

Every year in September, Trapani hosts the “Cous Cous Fest,” a festival that celebrates this dish through culinary competitions, tastings, and cultural exchanges with chefs from traditional couscous-making countries.

Another dish deeply rooted in Trapani’s culinary heritage is “Busiate al Pesto Trapanese,” a traditional, twisted pasta served with a pesto made from almonds, tomatoes, garlic, and basil.

Before you leave Trapani, indulge in a sweet treat such as the local Cannoli, crispy pastry tubes filled with sheep’s milk ricotta, usually bigger than in other parts of Sicily, and cassateddi, small fried raviola stuffed with sweetened sheep ricotta and chocolate drops.
