Day 2 – The beauty of Palermo & Monreale

This morning, just a short drive away from Palermo, the town of Monreale cradles you in its serene charm, with its stunning Cathedral showcasing exquisite mosaics that sparkle like the love in your eyes. Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the church is the outcome of the mixture of different workforces and styles employed for its realization: from the Nordic taste, to classic elements of Arab and byzantine traditions. Day 3 – Segesta, Marsala, Mothia

Segesta, a mesmerizing archaeological site in western Sicily, is a captivating journey back in time. At its heart stands a beautifully preserved Doric temple, a testament to the artistry and engineering prowess of ancient civilizations. In addition to the temple, there’s a well-preserved ancient theater nearby, which could seat approximately 4,000 spectators, making it a testament to the artistic and architectural prowess of the ancient civilization.This remote gem offers a serene escape, surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves, and distant Mediterranean views.

Your visit to Marsala promises a delightful blend of ancient maritime history and the exquisite flavors of local wines. Begin your journey in Marsala with a visit to the Punic Ship Museum, an archaeological gem that showcases the remains of ancient Phoenician ships dating back to the 3rd century BC.

The island of Mozia is an ancient Phoenician colony on the island of San Pantaleo in the Stagnone Nature Reserve of Marsala, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Thanks to its location, particularly favourable to maritime trade, Mothia soon became one of the most prosperous Western Phoenician colonies.Among the various exhibits in the Whitake Museum in Mozia is the Young Man of Mozia, depicting a draped male figure (an ephebe), probably brought to the island of Mozia by the Carthaginians after they sacked Selinunte in 409 BC.In addition to the exhibits in the museum, the island offers the ruins of the Phoenician-Punic sanctuary of Cappiddazzu, part of the necropolis, the House of the Mosaics, the Tofet area, North Gate, South Gate and the Casermetta.

Day 4 – The impressive Valley of the Temples in Agrigento

Nestled on the sun-drenched hills of Agrigento, Sicily, a few steps away form your hotel, the Valley of the Temples stands as a mesmerizing testament to the ancient splendor of Greek architecture and culture. Today, you’ll drive eastwards, exploring the Sicilian countryside and inland vistas on your way to Piazza Armerina and Caltagirone, two exquisite destinations in Sicily. Your adventure begins with a visit to the Roman Villa del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site close to Piazza Armerina that boasts a sprawling complex of well-preserved Roman mosaics that vividly depict scenes of daily life, mythology, and hunting. You’ll be awe-struck by the intricate details and vibrant colors that have endured for over 1,700 years. Stroll through the villa’s grand chambers and marvel at the craftsmanship that has survived the test of time.

Your journey continues to the picturesque town of Caltagirone, famous for its high quality ceramics. As you wander through the cobbled streets, you’ll be greeted by the sight of vibrant hand-painted ceramics adorning balconies, staircases, and storefronts.

Day 6 – Syracuse, the white town

Syracuse is a city brimming with history and ancient wonders. In Syracuse, history comes alive as you explore the archaeological park of Neapolis. Wander amidst the impressive Greek and Roman amphitheaters, where ancient spectacles once unfolded. The star of the show is the legendary Ear of Dionysius, a towering limestone cave with incredible acoustics. As you stroll through the historical Ortigia Island, you’ll be captivated by its narrow streets, baroque buildings, and vibrant local markets. The heart of Ortigia is Piazza del Duomo, a picturesque square graced by the stunning Syracuse Cathedral, a true masterpiece of Baroque architecture.

Syracuse is blessed with a stunning natural landscape, characterized by crystalline waters, picturesque coastlines, and verdant landscapes. The city’s coastal areas, including the Plemmirio Marine Reserve and the Capo Murro di Porco peninsula, offer breathtaking views and opportunities for outdoor recreation, such as swimming, snorkeling, and hiking. Day 7 – The Baroque valley: Ragusa, Modica, Scicli

Today, you’ll explore Ragusa, Modica and Scicli. These three charming towns, collectively known as the Val di Noto, are celebrated for their stunning baroque architecture, rich history, and delectable culinary traditions and are part of the Unesco World Heritage list since 2002.
Ragusa is a city of two souls with Ragusa Ibla, the historic old town nestled in a deep gorge. Walk along winding cobblestone streets, flanked by centuries-old buildings adorned with intricate baroque facades. Ragusa Ibla’s Cathedral of San Giorgio, a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque, stands tall at the heart of this enchanting district, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Proceed to Modica, one of the most special little romantic corners of Sicily with its abundance of Baroque Churches and Palaces, and pretty squares lines with palm trees. Highlights would include the magnificent Duomo (di San Giorgio), and countless chapels, churches, monasteries and private palazzos, cobblestoned narrow walkways.
Modica is also famous for the production of a special type of chocolate from ancient Aztec recipes (”Xocòatl azteca”) which you will taste at the best dolceria in town.

Scicli is nestled in the shadow of three valleys called caves, protected by the imposing rocky ridges, the elegant city opens up to the south and slopes down to the sea. Famous for its superb Baroque architecture, tasty cuisine and extraordinary festivities, it is a must-see destination! Many scenes from the TV drama were filmed in the pretty baroque town. Il Commissario Montalbano, born from the pen of Andrea Camilleri. The commissariat and the commissioner’s office, the Quaestor’s room in Montelusa, the Mannara, the seafront promenade in Marinella and many other places are located here. Here the imaginary Vigata becomes reality!

Day 8 – Noto and Palazzolo Acreide

Today, your journey will head you to the picturesque town of Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its Baroque beauty. Noto boasts a wealth of elegant palaces, churches, and squares, all constructed in the distinct local Baroque style. Marvel at the golden-hued stone facades adorned with intricate details as you explore the town and explore on a private visit the most beautiful and interesting private noble palazzo in town (optional).
Taste some delicious local granita and cakes at world-renowed Caffé Sicilia.

The road north from Noto climbs ever upwards into the Monti Iblei, a dramatic and rugged landscape characterised by steep limestone ravines, but also criss-crossed by dry stone walls and softened by wild juniper, prickly pear, olive, almond and carob trees.

Then, the landscape changes and a beautiful plateau of fertile green fields opens up, and about half an hour’s drive away, Palazzolo Acreide appears.

Hidden in the mountains, Palazzolo Acreide is something of an anomaly. The Greeks of Syracuse saw several advantages in founding a polis, Akrae, there on the top of a hill just west of today’s Palazzolo. Today it is an impressive archaeological site whose main attraction is a scenic theatre from the 3rd century BC. Palazzolo Acreide has been rebuilt in fine Baroque style, and much of what you will see in the historic centre today dates from the 18th century.

Day 9 – Catania, the lava city & Mt Etna

Begin your adventure in Catania, the vibrant heart of eastern Sicily. Marvel at the imposing presence of Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, looming over the city. Stroll through Catania’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you’ll encounter a striking blend of baroque architecture and bustling markets. Admire the iconic Elephant Fountain and the impressive Catania Cathedral, both emblematic of the city’s rich history and artistic heritage.

Indulge in a typical street food Catanese experience savouring the large proposal of arancini, local delicacies and granitas.

Proceed to Mt Etna. Your guide will lead you through this extraordinary journey, providing insights into the geological wonders of this active volcano and the captivating stories of its eruptions throughout history.

You’ll witness the stark contrast between the raw, volcanic wilderness and the lush vineyards and orchards that thrive in the fertile soil surrounding the mountain. You will understand why Catania and all the villages at the foot of the volcano have a very different energy from the rest of Sicily.

Day 10 – The charm of Taormina

Visiting the Greek Theatre and strolling along Corso Umberto, you will realise that Taormina’s strength lies in the perfect mix of its history and cultural heritage and the international glamour atmosphere.

Day 1 – Welcome to Sicily

The history of the Jews in Sicily goes back two millennia.
Significant Jewish settlements had existed in Sicily since early Roman times when Jews were brought there as slaves by victorious Roman armies after the sack of Jerusalem in 63.  However, it is generally presumed the Jewish population of Sicily was seeded prior to the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem. Rabbi Akiva visited the city of Syracuse during one of his trips abroad. During the Middle Ages there were Jewish quarters, or so-called “Giudecche” in about fifty towns of Sicily. Their size varied from about 350 to about 5,000 people.

When the Jewish communities of southern Italy suffered persecutions at the close of the thirteenth century, those of Sicily, at that time under a different rule, were unaffected. The Normans were tolerant with the Jewish population and in this period Jewish welfare increased and the culture flourished in many fields (medicine, philosophy, literature, etc.). The nearness to Africa and the Moslem world gave to the Sicilian Jewry the characteristics of a Moresque community. Hence “Sicilian Jewish history had in certain respects closer affinities with Spain than Italy” (C. Roth). In 1210, the Jews of Sicily faced so much persecution from Crusaders that Frederick II had to intervene on behalf of the Jews. Persecution of the Jews continued and in 1392 the Jews were ordered to live in ghettos. The culmination of religious persecution finally came with the Expulsion of the Jews from Sicily in 1492 by king Ferdinand The Catholic. At those times Palermo, Messina and several other cities had a considerable Jewish population. Jewish Sicilians probably constituted around one tenth of the island’s population. Many of the Sicilian Jewish refugees escaped to neighboring Calabria where in time they were forced to emigrate again to the rest of Europe. A significant segment of Sicily’s Jewish population were forced to convert to Catholicism and remained in Sicily. These converts were known as neofiti. But many of them remained Crypto-Jews.

The infamous Spanish edict of expulsion brought to an end the Jewish influence in Sicily. But the conversos kept secret Jewish customs. By the 1520s, acts of baptism and marriage in Sicilian churches near formerly Jewish communities listed a number of families bearing surnames such as de Simone (son of Simon), Siino (Sion) and Mosé (Moses), or Nero or Porpura (for the colours of the fabrics they dyed), and baptismal names such as Isacco, Beniamino, Abramo, Iasué and Davide, formerly rare among Sicilian Christians. Although the Inquisition succeeded in erasing almost all evidence of the existence of Sicilian Jews, it remains material for the careful researcher on genealogy, among which lists of baptisms and  trials of the Inquisition.

Day 4: Palermo – Erice – Trapani – Marsala – Agrigento

• Departure to the Medieval town of Erice city- the religious centre of the Elymians associated with goddesses of fertility. Wander through its’ ancient streets we will discover  the Giudecca area and see the only Jewish tombstone that the city conserve from its glorious past.
• We will drive along the Salt Route to tour the historic saltpan works in order to reach the city of  Marsala, after a short visit in the Tapestries Museum that describes scenes from the Jewish Wars we may stop in one of the  local winery’s cellar and taste some of the local productions.
• In Agrigento, accommodation at Villa Athena, 5 stars

Day 5: Siculiana- Agrigento

• After Breakfast we will drive long the West coast of Sicily. Our first stop will be the small village of Siculiana in order to discover one of the Jewish tombstone reused and transformed into  baptistery. Then we will continue to toward Agrigento, whose history dates back to 6th century B.C., guided tour of the Valley of the Temples, a magnificent cluster of Greek ruins overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
  At evening Join us for a magical view of the valley of the Temples by night.

Day 6: Piazza Armerina – Agira – Syracuse

• After breakfast, we will drive along the interior part of the island discovering its fascinating landscape and fertility in order to reach Piazza Armerina and visit The Roman Villa del Casale with its stunning mosaics.
• The, onto the small town of Agira. Visit the Synagogue site and the magnificent stone portal of the aron hakodesh with its Hebrew inscription.
• Finally, we will drive toward the oriental coast in order to reach  the city of Syracuse.
• Arrival in Syracuse and accommodation at the Ortea Palace, 5 stars.

Day 7:  Syracuse

• Breakfast at the hotel.
• Today all day will be dedicated to the magnificent city of  Syracuse, once the most important rival of Athens. Our first stop is at Acradina, the site of the earliest Jewish settlement. We will visit the catacombs of San Giovanni and the crypt of San Marciano, who, according to the legend, was killed by the Jews of the city. The visit will follow a guided tour of the archaeological park. Then, we’ll move to the island of Ortigia and walk in the narrow streets of the Giudecca (the ancient Jewish quarter) in order to discover the pulsating heart of the Jewish life: the site of the Synagogue and the Miqwè – Jewish ritual bath, 11 meters below ground level, unique example of a Jewish architecture from the byzantine period.
  The tour ends in the main Piazza visiting the Duomo once Greek Temple dedicated Athena.
• Overnight stay at the Ortea Palace, 5 stars.

Day 8: Catania – Mount Etna – Taormina

• After breakfast we will drive to the city of Catania for a short guided visit that include the famous Duomo dedicated to Saint Agatha and the Ursino Castle with some evidence of Jewish influence on its architecture and Roman period Jewish tombs.
• Then, up to the slopes of Mt. Etna. Weather and volcanic conditions permitting, we experience the lava fields and incredible views of Europe’s highest and most active volcano. On our way down we will stop in one of the top boutique wineries located on the lower slop of the Volcano for a wine tasting and a light meal based on the local products.
• We end the day in Taormina and accommodation at the Blemond Timeo, 5 stars.

Day 9: Messina-Taormina

• In the morning we will drive along the east coast in order  to reach the city of Messina to explore the city centre and its Jewish history.
