OVERVIEW
A perfect Sicilian-French fusion. This is the atmosphere at Baglio di Pianetto, a winery relais belonging to the Count and the Countess Marzotto. Years ago, during one of their escapes in Sicily, the Count Paolo chose the territory of Pianetto, the countryside between Piana degli Albanesi and Santa Cristina Gela, belonging to the d.o.c. Monreale. Here, he introduced organic farming, producing Inzolia and Viognier white wines and Merlot and Petit Verdot red. The Count renovated an old baglio immersed in the vineyards, turning it into an exquisite country house. Countess Donna Florence used the touch born of her French origins to select furnishings and details. The building’s exteriors recall the typical Arab-Norman style of certain Palermitani churches while interiors reflect the character of the landlady, with elegant French meubles and charms.
When the sky is clear over the large backyard, the surrounding landscape, the vineyards, the plateau of Piana degli Albanesi and the valleys crossing in the distance will caress your eyes. Quietude and relaxation is what you’ll find in the garden or swimming pool area while reading a book or drinking a glass of wine.
The Baglio has no internet access at the moment. This is a good thing. You shouldn’t be working anyway!
THE AREA
Baglio di Pianetto is only four kilometers from Piana degli Albanesi, a small town of Albanian origins. The local population proudly preserves its language, customs and folklore. So, do not be stunned if road signs are in Albanian and you don’t understand a single word of what they say!
The Baglio is well located for day trips all around western Sicily, including Palermo, the capital of Sicily, the Norman Cathedral of Monreale and its nearby cloister, the Medieval village of Cefalù and its Norman Cathedral, the village of San Vito lo Capo with its white beach, the wildlife reserve of Zingaro, the Medieval town of Erice, Trapani and the salt-pans. Segesta, Marsala and Mazara del Vallo are also within easy reach.
THE PROPERTY
Demetra, Iride, Nettuno, Le Pernici, La Caccia, Le Pere. These are some of the names of the 13 refined rooms offered at Baglio di Pianetto, taken from Greek mythology and everyday life in a noble house, each with large en-suite bathrooms. All rooms are different in size and most come with double or twin beds, as well as a few comfortable family rooms. Each has its own furnishings of original French antiques belonging to the Marzottos. A few choice rooms even offer a terrace or a balcony overlooking the many different views - courtyard, backyard or swimming pool. Common areas include a courtyard with a patio, a swimming pool and a large living room with a piano. In the restaurant you can relax with a glass of Ra’is – the delicious Moscato di Noto, and fuse the interior with the exterior as you gaze outside onto the winter garden. The restaurant is open to the public, and you may find yourself dining alongside notable Palermitani, or locals, for family reunions and celebrations.
