Overview

Virzì is a location which seems to be not of this world. Finding it may prove difficult, but once you arrive you’ll realise the trip was worth it.
Situated in the hilly area of contrada Virzi, within the Monreale district, between Palermo and Alcamo, the estate belongs to the aristocratic family of the Princes of Spadafora and extends over 180 hectares, 100 of which are vineyards.  Don Pietro turned the estate into a fruitful farm, and now it’s his son Francesco who tends these vineyards and follows the production of quality wines and the extra virgin olive oil. Recently, their “Chardonnat Schietto” vintage 2008 was awarded the prestigious “Gold Medal” at the International Competition “Chardonnay Du Monde,” where the best Chardonnays from around the world were tasted and compared.
Life at Virzì is simple and takes you back to the basics. Located around the main courtyard opposite the winery, lodges for guests are a true color explosion. The orange, pink, green and light blue plasterwork of the exteriors shines bright, surrounded by the vineyards. Once horse stables, they are now comfortable, colourful and casually furnished in an informal countryside style.
Virzì is a pleasant accidental discovery, with the beauty of the landscape and the simplicity of a throbbing farm.

The Property

Accommodation is offered in six independent rustic lodges around the cellars, restored to their original state to welcome guests. Named Casa Pimpa, Casa Janine, Casa Azzurra, Casa SoleLuna, Casa Sonia and Casa Gialla, most offer views of the vineyards, have wooden ceilings and masonry kitchens and can accommodate from 2 to 6 guests. With the exception of Casa Azzurra and Casa Sonia, all are equipped with air-conditioning.
Guests can relax by a beautiful swimming-pool with a glass of wine and a good book or escape under a gazebo when the Sicilian sun begins burning you. Delicious local folk cooking may be tasted at the restaurant, which uses fresh vegetables from the garden of the farm. Here, on request, you may experience a hands-on cooking class, and Francesco Spadafora will lead you into the secrets of the cellar for a proper wine tasting.

The Area

Strategically placed between the Palermo and Trapani areas, Virzì offers interesting day trips: the archaeological parks of Segesta and Selinunte; the Zingaro wildlife reserve with its hidden creeks and beaches; the hamlet of Scopello and its tonnara, the ancient building from where tuna fishing ships used to depart and their catch was prepared when they returned; the white beaches of San Vito Lo Capo (in September pop in at the Couscous Fest, with chefs from all over the Mediterranean); Marsala offering wine tours downtown. If you want an enlightening experience, visit the town of Corleone (44 km) its image forever linked to the mafia and “The Godfather” by Francis Ford Coppola. Stop at its Anti-mafia Museum (officially C.I.D.M.A. - Centro di Documentazione sulle Mafie e Movimento Antimafia) which aims to promote the study of the mafia and criminal phenomena as well as the anti-mafia movement and the individuals involved. For art addicts, a trip to the town of Gibellina (35 km), now an en-plein air contemporary museum, is worth a visit.
