San Michele

Location: Mt Etna
Sleeps: 28
Bedrooms: 14
Features: volcanic area, winery
Surroundings: Mt Etna, Taormina, Catania, Syracuse

Strategically positioned opposite the Ionian coast and the gulf between Catania and Taormina, with Mt Etna towering in the background, San Michele stands out majestically in the ravishing panorama.  Its vineyards lay in terraces along the hill, forced by the morphology of the territory.

This large estate belongs to one of the most important Sicilian noble families.  The current Barone was a former Italian Ambassador in Russia, and he and his family still spend time in their country house at San Michele.
Since 1800 traditional wines and spumante have been produced here, and the last 25 years has seen the creation of new wines which have won international acclaim. Ask Michele or Pietro, the Baron’s sons, to guide you on a wine tour along the vineyards and the modern cellars. Native grapes such as Carricante, Catarratto and Nerello Mascalese are harvested for the d.o.c. wines. and Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon for the I.G.T. The Nerello Mascalese is also used to make the brut sparkling wine and the grappa. San Michele also produces jams, marmalades, preserves, honey and a fabulous extra virgin olive oil. To the delight of those with a discerning palate, a stay at San Michele is a true gastronomic experience with extraordinary typical home-made food and unforgettable wines.
On a small hill within the estate, a manor house has been restored from an old wine cellar and farmhouse and turned into an agriturismo to pamper guests in the sober country style of local noble families.

The Property

At San Michele you can taste peaceful simple life found at the foothill of Mt Etna and choose between rooms or self-catering apartments, kitted out in a traditional manner with wooden country style furnishings and whitewashed walls. Each room comes with telephone, TV Sat, air-con, heating and a mini bar and some have a private outdoor area.  You’ll also find a reading space in the cosy lounge, as well as  PCs. Large terraces are found around the house, and there’s a lawn where you can relax and enjoy the coastal view - including Calabria on a clear day.  In the summer breakfast is served under a pergola, which offers a great view of the volcano. From there you can move straight to the nearby large rectangular-shaped pool and the solarium equipped with sunbeds, sunshades, table and chairs. The silence and the Sicilian sun may rock you to sleep. This is the perfect place to soak up the scenery and totally unwind with a book or a glass of wine.

Your four course meal will be served in the large restaurant located in a separate building about 400 mt from the agriturismo. Food is typically home cooked cuisine with fresh local ingredients. A first course consisting of a large choice of antipasti should not deter you from saving room for the rest of the meal, usually a savoury home-made pasta (ask for the pistachio sauce) followed by a meat course (the falsomagro is delicious!) and a side dish. Glass after glass and course after course, your meal at Murgo will be an engaging traditional gourmet experience!

The Area

By car you can easily reach most important spots in eastern Sicily: Catania, Taormina, Syracuse, Noto, Ragusa, Modica, Piazza Armerina. Or, just have a tour of the wineries located on Mt Etna around the Castiglione and Linguaglossa areas.
