Atelier sul Mare

Location: Castel di Tusa (Cefalù area)
Sleeps: 80
Bedrooms: 40
Features: Medieval villages, beach area
Surroundings: Cefalù, Palermo, Madonie Mountains

This is the reign of Art utopia” says Antonio Presti, “and art must be lived as a dream.” There are no better words than those of its creator and owner to describe the Art Hotel Atelier sul Mare. The first concept hotel in Sicily, dating back to 1990, may be one of the few hotels in the world that is a living museum of contemporary art.

Placed in a extraordinarily beautiful natural setting, facing the gulf of Castel di Tusa with the warm waters of the Tyrrehnian Sea, the wild and green Nebrodi Mountains in its background, 17 out of the 40 rooms of the hotel are considered unique masterpieces, created by 25 famous international artists.

Here you will walk into a melting pot of different backgrounds and ages: Dario Bellezza, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Raul Ruiz, Mario Ceroli, Paolo Icaro, Michele Canzoneri, Maurizio Mochetti, Maria Lai, Adele Cambria, Mauro Staccioli, Agostino Ferrari, Graziano Marino, Piero Dorazio, Luigi Mainolfi, Fabrizio Plessi, Agnese Purgatorio, Cristina Bertelli, Ute Pyka, Umberto Leone, Sislej Xhafa, and Antonio Presti.
Some artists’ names may immediately arouse a pure human and historic curiosity, without detracting from their artistic value: Danielle Mitterand is the widow of the 21st President of France François Mitterand;  Renato Curcio was the founder of the Brigade Rosse (Red Brigades), the militant group responsible for political strife that during the 1970s led to several subversive and criminal actions against the Italian Government, politicians, journalists and judges; Vincenzo Consolo is one of the greatest living Italian writers; Mimmo Cuticchio is the master of that Puppet Theatre (Teatro dei Pupi) belonging  to the oral and immaterial UNESCO World Heritage List.

No matter how you look at it, the Atelier sul Mare is a unique and vibrant experience

The Property

Upon arrival, the external architecture of the building may induce you to change your mind and find another accommodation.  But continuing on, you will immediately become immersed in the art dimension through the Nike sculpture holding the welcome arcade. This introduces you to the one-of-a-kind lobby wallpapered  with articles about the Fiumara d’Arte, Antonio Presti’s impressive first success in the area as patron of the arts.

Stay in one of the 17 art rooms at the Atelier sul Mare and become part of the artwork itself.  The names immediately introduce you to the special atmosphere of each room: The Nest, Mystery for the Moon, The Shadow Line, Energy, I’m Boarding on a Paper Boat, The Prophet Room, Dreams Between Signs, The Room of the Denied Sea, Hammam, and The Room of the Opera, just to mention a few.

If contemporary art is not your forte, you may prefer to sleep in one of the 20 standard rooms, furnished in a more proper hotel style but still maintaining some artistic details – original pictures, art photos and ceramics. All rooms come with an en suite bathroom, air conditioning, heating and telephone. Most have sea views. A private beach, a restaurant, two bars and a pottery lab make the appeal of the Atelier sul Mare complete

The Area

If you are passionate about modern art, you cannot miss the Fiumara d’Arte, the largest open-air contemporary sculpture park in Europe, created along the Tusa river bed.
Afterwards, you may decide to dive into the past and visit the several Medieval villages between the Madonie and the Nebrodi Mountains. Or, you may decide for an excursion to Cefalù and Palermo.
