Overview

Just a few metres from the Mediterranean sea, opposite the Egadi archipelago, the Antiche Saline area evokes ancient and bold times.  The site of the famous naval battle between the Romans and the Carthaginians in 249 B.C. , its sixteenth century tower still stands proudly as a record of the cruel Saracens’ attacks. The surrounding landscape of Antiche Saline is unique and magical, and its contrasts are evident.  Saline (salt pans) built during the Arab domination stand undisturbed – heaps of salt twinkling alongside strips of land afloat in the sea.  Their silence is deafening, intimidating, peaceful. Ashore, you’ll find vineyards, orchards, a stretch of bare land and then the sea again, blue, crystal, calm. The outlines of the islands of Favignana and Levanzo appear on the horizon, exciting curiosity and imagination.

Antiche Saline is a small boutique hotel, once an ancient baglio, a countryside building typical of western Sicily, just a 10 minute drive from the towns of Trapani and Marsala. The estate once belonged to the Platamone Marquis and was accurately restored in 2005 into a cosy and refined Relais.
The colours of the Antiche Saline are typically Mediterranean, white, blue and ochre. Exteriors and interiors are bright and suffused with light.
At sunset, when the sky turns red, orange, purple and blue, the Relais is in its element.  During the warmest months salt reflects all colours, creating poetic plays of light.

In this fairy-like atmosphere, we feel just light years away from frenetic and racing modern life.
Here, at this escape from the pace, you’ll find the ideal location for a romantic get-away!

The Property

At Antiche Saline, with its warm, fresh-looking and sober Mediterranean style, rooms are offered as: standard, sea-view standard, superior, junior suite standard and junior suite premium.

All rooms are unique, forced into their sizes and shapes by the old building. Comfortable and small, all are outfitted with air-conditioning, TV-SAT and internet connection.  Some rooms come with windows set quite high, while first floor rooms offer a better view over the saline and the saltworks.

The cosy restaurant, Taverna Paradiso (Paradise Tavern), serves up a good sample of the local Trapanese cuisine and offers a comprehensive wine list. You need to book in advance, and it may be closed in the off season. The swimming-pool is surrounded by a small garden and a vineyard.  A snack with typical caponata and pane cunzato might be a good way to indulge in this calm atmosphere while enjoying pleasant relaxation, silence and bright colours.

The Area

Situated a few kilometres from Highway A29, Palermo-Mazara del Vallo, Antiche Saline is ideally placed for excursions to some of the most interesting spots in western Sicily. A car is compulsory to visit the area.  Park it at the port of Trapani and sail by ferry to the Egadi Islands.  Favignana is the largest of these and famous for its ruthless, bloody but still engaging mattanza, or red tuna fishing, whose valuable flesh attract many Japanese buyers year after year during May and early June.  Bearded and mighty men, named tonnaroti, headed by their Rais (Arab for boss) on board boats, play a unison chorus of the cialoma, to beat time and movements. It is their dirge, both a song and a prayer ending with savage rebel yells. Participating is body blow but it is a plunge into ancient rites and customs.
