From the Scarlattis to Carmen Consoli


Sicilian composers existed in the 9th century, seen from the discovery of books containing Christian liturgical verse. It was only in the 17th century however that musicians of a certain quality came to the forefront.
This was the Scarlatti family: the singer Anna Maria, the violinist and composer Francesco, the tenor Tommaso and their more famous brother Alessandro, versatile composer creator of the kind of work later known as Neapolitan, particularly appreciated and studied by Bach. In his inexhaustible creativity Alessandro composed some thirty oratorios, seven hundred cantatas, twenty serenades, violin concertos, suites for flute and harpsichord, masses. His contribution to melodrama was fundamental for the development of 18th century opera. . It is to him that we owe the codification of the symphony before the opera (overture) with the allegro-adagio-allegro scheme, later aodpted at the end of the Rossini era.

The last exponent of Neapolitan opera was Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) born in Catania and one of the most important authors for the melodramma. He had very important maestros and teachers as the composer Giacomo Zingarelli who oriented his studies in the direction of Neapolitan opera, Mozart and haydn’s works for instruments. Among his most important works Bianca e Fernando (1826) , Il pirata (1827) composed for the La Scala Theatre, La Straniera (1829), Zaira and I Capuleti e i Montecchi (both 1830), La sonnambula and La Norma which are considered his masterpieces, both composed in 1831.
Bellini’s cerativity, which seemed to be flourishing amazingly, did not go beyond this however, as the composer died suddenly at little more than the age of thirty.

Last three decades have been prolific for Sicilian musics with well know artist in Italy and Europe.

Catania seems to be a breeding ground for artists: Franco Battiato is without any doubt the most famous Sicilian composer and singer, his music being a contemporary blend of Mediterranean sounds with influence from distant lands; Carmen Consoli one most representative of the new Italian rock generation; Geraldina Trovato and Silvia Salemi pop-singers having both great vocal capacity; Mario Biondi, a black voice and a Sicilian soul.
